Already 10 years ago we put a special selection from the oldest vineyard sites of the HUSARENKAPPE in our treasury to present it in 2021 after 10 years of maturation with the historic label of 1850 as "Anniversary Wine 770 Years Winery Burg Ravensburg", limited to 2000 bottles.
Vines over 50 years old are rooted in 220 million years old unique gypsum keuper rock. The name of the site is closely linked to the birth of Baden Riesling: in 1782, Riesling seedlings were "imported" from the Rhine for the first time by the Margrave of Baden for his vineyards. Baron Göler von Ravensburg, then a major in the Baden Hussar Regiment, is said to have obtained vines from these seedlings for his vineyards on the Burgberg of Ravensburg, brought them on horseback to Sulzfeld well protected in his cap, and thus founded the monopollage Husarenkappe. GROSSE LAGE characterizes wines from the best vineyard sites.
The year starts cold with lots of snow, followed by a sunny, warm April. With an explosive budbreak and early flowering, we started a dry year with three weeks of vegetation ahead. With an early start to harvest in early September, sunny, dry weather helped produce perfect, golden grapes.
Now, after ten years in the treasure chamber, the HUSARENKAPPE presents itself in top form. A spicy, herbal attack with layered nuances of pineapple, grapefruit and subtle caramel tells of this sunny vintage; on the palate, immensely fresh as well as powerful.
